Just the other day Ms. Collins was featured on the Marian McPartland PBS radio show and she played her wonderful composition "Marjolaine". This LP features that track along with some excellent trumpet by Jack Sheldon and a number of vocals by Ms. Collins. Very worthwhile and hard to find. $25.00 plus postage.
AMG EXPERT REVIEW: Pianist-vocalist Joyce Collins, who has spent much of her career as an educator in the Los Angeles area, has recorded remarkably few albums as a leader. In fact this Discovery date was only her second opportunity to lead a session, following her Jazzland debut by 21 years. Joined by trumpeter Jack Sheldon (for half of the selections), bassist Chuck Domanico and drummer Jim Plank on the out-of-print LP, Collins shows that she is a fine pianist and (on a few of the numbers) an equally expressive singer. Highlights include "Alone Together," "Don't Ever Leave Me," "I Get Along Without You Very Well" (which has a second theme composed by singer Jeri Southern) and a solo piano rendition of "Some Other Time." This album is worth searching for.
